Comments: | I had been to Udipi before. Yesterday (06/14/2003) I was disgusted and irritated at their attitude, during the lunch buffet. Everyone was being served the dhosa - which comes free during the buffet. In our case the waiter did not bother to bring the dhosas to our table. When we reminded one of the other waiter that why we didn't get theb dhosas, he just tried to weasel-word the situation by his inane blabber. Even after reminding, we were not served dhosas till the end. This callous and asinine attitude of the staff at Udipi restaurant is semblative of the most unprofessional attitude that one occassionally finds at Indian restaurtant. (I've noticed such attitude in Indian restaurants in San Francisco and Montreal.)
Being ethnic Indians (like most of the staff at Udipi), we finally concluded that that these bunch of folks are servile to Americans who frequent the restaurant - to curry favor perhaps. But to a desi (Indian), another desi (Indian) is a person who is an object of legitimate contempt. No one is paying any less; why should me and my family be singled out as compared to other customers?
I'll not recommend, based on my recent experience, Udipi to anyone. The food maybe prepared professionally, but is served by unprofessional waiters. |

Cuisine: | Indian/Vegetarian | Price: | $$ inexpensive |
Ambience: | tacky | Notes: | uneven maintenance-lightbulbs out, etc. |
Food: | *** excellent | Notes: | superb south indian cuisine |
Service: | poor | Notes: | uneven-have been catered to and also ignored on diff. visits |
Favorites: | sambhar, iddli, dosa |
Comments: | Despite the uneven service, the food is fantastic and a real bargain. It's vegetarian fare, so be aware there's no meat served. The sambhar is particularly good--well spiced, warming to the body but not hot on the tongue. The dosas are crispy and light, best without the potato filling in our experience. The lunch buffet is a good bargain if you can get there just as they open at 11:30 am. Otherwise, many of the items suffer from sitting on the hot table, and it's not so enjoyable. |

Comments: | Having traveled in and around India, I know what good indian food tastes like. Most of the dishes on the menu are tastless. I have grown not to trust this venue, for it has changed managers four times in the past 7 years. This time, the restaurant has hit its low point. I am a lover of spicy food, so this restaurant doesnt impress me. If you like tastless and bland food, I reccomend this place highly. |

Restaurant: | Udipi | Location: | 91st and metcalf |
Cuisine: | South Indian Vegetarian | Price: | $$ inexpensive |
Ambience: | * average | Notes: | very simple but not private |
Food: | ** very good | Notes: | lots of choice but some dishes like idlis were not fresh |
Service: | poor | Notes: | very poor, depends on the mood of the waiter |
Favorites: | Uddin Vade, mushroom fry, pudina chutney, uttapa etc |
Comments: | I have been to this place countless number of times. In all these visits, I have observed that their service is of very poor quality. The service entirely depends on the mood of the waiter. Even though all this makes it look bad. The food in the buffet is a real good bargain for the money. Also it represents some true Karnataka -- Udipi hotel style food. |

Comments: | I love going to Udipi for lunch buffet. It is inexpensive and the food is great. Udipi means "vegetarian" I found out.... No one really knows that. Anyway, the service is lousy and the decor is pretty tacky. Who cares, the food is awesome! I love how it is close to Whole Foods Market too :) |

Comments: | I've eaten here several times after moving to town in '03. It's apparently a loosely-held chain, with restaurants of the same name and similar menus in a number of cities. Udipi in Cincinnati was new, very popular and very good when I lived there, despite it being in a fairly yucky neighborhood. That's why I was excited to find an Udipi here. Unfortunately, items I'd grown to love in Cinci tasted different, not as good here. Maybe this is more authentic and I'm just odd, but everything here seems a little "off." The buffet features a lot to choose from but it really didn't impress me. I've also noticed sticky floors and improperly washed dishes and water pitchers on practically every visit. I think the owner need to confer with their colleagues in Cincinnati. 'Til then, I'll go elsewhere. |
