Restaurant: | Abysinnia | Location: | Shawnee Mission, KS |
Cuisine: | Ethiopian | Price: | $$ inexpensive |
Ambience: | tacky | Notes: | Badly needs a remodel |
Food: | *** excellent | Notes: | Best Ethiopian in Kansas City |
Service: | * average | Notes: | Could use a bit of professionalism |
Favorites: | All vegetarian items. |
Comments: | Abysinnia is in some sort of a former Italian restaurant/bar, and I think they made no changes to the décor in the transition. A person I took to be the kitchen helper has been our waitress each time we've eaten there. That said, the food is very good. This is easily best of the three places to get Ethiopian food in KC at this time. |

Comments: | I thought it was kind of expensive as it cost me over $9 for some fish, a dab of coleslaw, a dab of potato salad, two slices of plain white bread and a small Pepsi (no free refills!) The food was pretty good but the coleslaw and potato salad were average at best. The catfish had a crunchy cornmeal type breading that I had never eaten before but it too was only ok. It says to expect to wait 15-25 minutes for your order on the door and they mean it. I found their ordering system confusing as you have to go by 3 different size styrofoam containers sitting on the counter with the items you get in the different sizes written inside of them. Service was indifferent like they could have cared less if I was there or not. A very average experience. Save your money and go to Long Johns. |

Comments: | They say this place is very unP.C. Forget about all that. It is a hoot with great food,an extensive liquor list even carrying Louis X ,and a guy who sings live cheesy lounge music! it's like stepping into a scene from Goodfella's! Who cares if it's next to a strip club, the place guarantee's an unforgettable experience! |

Comments: | If you are looking for something unusual and delicious, this is
it. Daily soups and pizzas, roasted vegetables, lovely salads that are too pretty to eat, a wine list that doesn't read like a catalog and changes often. If you are a vegetarian and are sick of picking other restaurants' menus apart to get a decent meal this place is for you. If you haven't tried it already you definitely should. If you have tried it, try again! With a menu that changes with the seasons there's always something new to experience. |

Service: | **** superb | Notes: | We felt welcomed and appreciated throughout |
Favorites: | Buffalo (fish), Pepper Fish |
Comments: | We went to the New Africa armed with a $25 gift certificate,
purchased off the KCPT auction. We left full, happy and determined to spread the word. If you ever needed a reason to kick yourself out of your suburban comfort zone, this is it. Don't let the address put you off. We're a white couple from Mission and felt welcomed by everyone. The cook boasted he could serve Kansas City's best fish, and for my money he delivered --one huge order of fried fish, another of baked fish topped with sweet peppers and mustard sauce -- at prices so low, you'll feel guilty. We had to keep adding menu items to fill out the gift certificate, and we couldn't finish everything. (And we've found the city's best deal on onion rings.) We'll be back. You should go. |

Comments: | The 3 of us walked in to Peachtree with sweatsuits on, big mistake, 5 star setting, business attire and up. I enjoy down home cooking but I really enjoyed having it served on classy dinnerware. We admolished the basket of sweet potatoe (Dan Quayle spelling) corn bread muffins. Baked porkchops, greens, etc. Mouth wiping meal but with linen napkins. Singer was Sharon Thompson, kind of bluesy and jazzy.. nice mix. |

Food: | ** very good | Notes: | Thai pork was overcooked, but had delicious sauce. |
Service: | * average | Notes: | Inexperience was on full display. |
Favorites: | House salad was remarkably delicious! |
Comments: | This spot has good food and a lot of potential but is limited by lack of attention to detail in service. Silverware at dinner was a knife and fork wrapped in a paper napkin, and the fork was removed from the salad plate and placed on the table by the server, rather than replaced with a fresh fork. We were not offered water. The young wait staff clustered around the bar to chat, in full view of the customers. Our server began speaking to us before she reached our table and had to repeat everything she said. Disappointing. |
