Comments: Whenever I talk to people about the Golden Ox, I hear, "Go to the Hereford House or Ruth Chris!" Yeah right! -The Golden Ox has never disappointed me and we love to eat there. More people should try it. The first time I called for reservations, I asked if they were as good as the Hereford House just joking around and they were sure to note it. The manager came out to make sure that we were having a great dinner. There is a guy who sings for Birthdays and you get a HUGE icecream sundae.

Comments: My wife & I took my mother-in-law & her husband to the Golden Ox for lunch today. This was our first visit there - recommended by a friend. We all had steaks and were quite pleased. My filet mignon was one of the best I have ever had. Service was very good and considerate. Not inexpensive, but an excellent restaurant. Glad to have taken in-laws there for part of their Kansas City experience.

Comments: One of the two best filet mignons I have ever had! This [and The Spudder in Tulsa] have got to be the two best steak houses in America! I have eaten at the Hereford House but the steak was not as good--and cost more to boot!!

Comments: Went to the Goldent Ox and was seated almost immediately. The waiter came by and we ordered drinks, appitizers, salads and entrees. 30 minutes later he finally brought the drinks. By the time we received our entrees three other parties (including one of 12) had been seated, served and left. I complained and the mangager on duty basically pushed me out the door. No offer for even desert or anything. I wrote a letter to the owner, Jerry Raschlbach, he called the house left a message on the machine and said he would get back to me. As of today Sept 5, 2002 have not heard from him and its been 2 and a half months. Will never go back and that is sad as my mom worked there when Paul Robinson of the Gilbert/Robinson chain ran the place. Truly dissapointed.

Comments: My memories of the Golden Ox go back to my childhood. It was always my father's favorite restaurant (maybe that's why it's also mine!). Service the way it used to be - very attentive, but not overbearing. Food is always excellent! My husband likes the Filet WELL done (can't imagine), but he's always pleased with the 'melt-in-your-mouth' cuts of meat. Whenever the time comes for a special celebration, or just as a treat to ourselves, there is never a question where to go...it's the Golden Ox!

Comments: My husband and I come from Chicago once a year in order to get a steak from the Goden Ox. It is the purest, meatiest steak we have found. The place is a comfortable throw back to a 50's martini swilling steak house. Please check out the mens room photos...they are from a turn on the century KC fire in the stockyards.

Comments: This is a new location for this restaurant and in all fairness perhaps they don't have things quite right yet. But my strip looked like a 4 oz luncheon sirloin and was over cooked to boot. It took 30 minutes to recook and no price reduction. I took the recook home in a box because everyone else had finished and were ready to leave.

Comments: I was looking for a special, quiet, nice restaurant with pleasant atmosphere to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. I hadn't been to the Golden Ox stockyards restaurant for many years, and I recalled that they had opened a location in Overland Park. We made reservations on a Thurs. for Sat. night, but when we arrived in a pouring rain, there was no record of them. Fortunately, we were able to be seated, anyway. The service provided by our waiter was excellent, but the food took nearly 45 minutes to arrive, with my wife's and my own baked potatos on the wrong plates...this also happened at the table across the aisle from us. My wife's lobster was somewhat dry and mediocre, and my steak had too much gristle, and was basically flavorless. This, added to a few other minor flaws, made the meal a $100 disappointment. But, the ambience and the surroundings were nice. It'll probably be many more years before we return again, too many other places to try.

Comments: I took my wife and parents there on a recent Saturday night. Service was poor, we had to ask twice for the ordered wine, the same for the salad. When our steaks finally came, I got the wrong one. After I discussed the issue, with what I assume to be the Manager, I was brought the right cut of meat, but it was gray, and tasteless. I cannot believe I am saying this but it looked for all the world like it had been microwaved! I sent it back and went hungry. It was the most third-rate dinner I have had in years. I will not go back!

Comments: Very sad day in K.C. The Golden Ox closed Nov. 9, 2003. Many fine restaraunts serve K.C. but none served a better steak. It's just something different than any other place - it's just Kansas City.
Atmosphere is the real American west in the midst of a city which owes it's past to the cattle business. As part of the Livestock Exchange Building, the Golden Ox was an experience in the heritage of this city, almost like visiting a museum.
No suburban-franchize-schmaltz here just the real thing in the real part of town. sob ... sob ... sob

Comments: I first went to the Ox in 1960. Have loved it since until about the past 12-18 months. Even liked the menu upgrades. They did that right, then things began to fail. Our last experience was horrible. We wrote the management. No comments back from that or an email follow up. Obvious they just didn't care to do their best as in the past. What a shame that the Ox is no more. With any luck, Plaza III's Joe Wilcox (and crew) will buy this place and make it what it should be.

Comments: The Ox has reopened under new owner Steve Greer. My Dry Manhattan and husband's Tanqueray Martini were excellent. Onion rings appetizer was piping hot and delicious. Salad was very cold and crispy. We both had Prime Rib which was hot and tender & cooked "medium", just as we ordered. Loaded baked potatoe was giant sized and tasty. I like hot food to be served hot and cold food to be served cold. Definitely met all my expectations and I'm not easy to please. New owner was very attentive, came by our table and asked how everything was. No room for dessert. Will definitely go back again to try new items on the menu. The Ox is back and definitely worth going to - "Dinner" includes a choice of salad and vegetable. This is unlike some steakhouses where everything is "a la carte". Great food at a great price. Have booked our "Christmas Party" with the Ox.

Comments: I waited tables at the Ox 20 years ago when the food was great but overall cleanliness and ambience was lacking. My son and I was messing around in KC one recent Saturday when we decided to stop by the Ox for early dinner, when the doors opened. I was extremely impressed!! We were graciously received in spite of our casual-casual dress; the waiter was quite attentive & eager to help us decide on the perfect wine with dinner offering taste samples; the owner even stopped by our table to check on us! The place is CLEAN; wait staff professional & prefessionally dressed. I highly recommend the Ox for outstanding food and a true Kansas City-style dining experience ... kudos to the new owner!!

Comments: Visiting the Golden Ox was to be a very stimulating experience. The food was talked up as long with the atmosphere. I have never been so disappointed by a dining experience till now. The food was cold and undercooked, the service was poor and the manager on duty was nasty. He spoke down to us, as if we were lost children. He also tried to convince us, that our meal was actually good and there was not a problem. The server that we had, taken 25 minutes to bring us our drinks and the entire dining experience took over 3 hours. For the price that I was paying for a nice elegant meal, I had better service at the local McDonalds.

Comments: We have been participating in the American Royal Junior Livestock show for nearly 20 years. We always look forward to eating at the ox and make a point to take the kids there to see the history of the ox and eat at one of the finest places in america. But, this year I was very dissappointed. We took some friends that have not been to KC and they wanted to eat at the ox with us. There was 11 of us total and everyone was not wanting to dissappoint the other by critizing the steak each had ordered. So nobody said anything for a couple of days. Two days later I mentioned that I was dissappointed that my steak was cold and had no flavor. Come to find out each and everyone there had a meer warm steak. I am sure that night was the exception, but we are all discouraged from ever going back.

Comments: The Golden Ox was a long-standing tradition in my family. My father and grandfather used to take my brother and me every month. Last November the restaurant closed to our disappointment. Surprisingly enough it has reopened and is better than ever. The service has always been great but the quality of food has gotten even better. My top sirloin was incredible, in fact, there was nothing left on any of my families plates. Clearly the best value for your money when it comes to true Kansas City Steaks!!!!

Comments: I just loved the new look inside the Ox. I have been going their for birthdays, family gatherings, and christmas parties. I was so sad that Mr. Rosha ... whatever that guys name is closed the OX down. BUT, and I mean a big BUT, the new owner Stephen Greer has turned that place around, like no buddies business. Go Greer, the steaks that my friends and myself had were awesome. The beer is cold and "The price is Right"! BOB. I will be going back to take parties there all the time. Thanks Ox for being so good.
